Iolite is said to have been used by the Vikings as a way of navigating the Arctic sea by sun and stars, when visibility was low. It filtered out the haze and helped them locate the sun with it's pleochroism (the way the light reflects off a crystal's surface, appearing to be different colours at different angles).
